Last updated: November 6, 2026, 07:15 (JST) / This article is built around Al Jazeera reporting, cross-checked against Reuters, CNN, Fox News, BBC and AFP, and against official statements from Ukraine, Russia, the United States and Iran. Japanese domestic media were excluded as sources.
Key Takeaways (3 Points)
1Ukraine hit Russia's Ryazan region with more than 200 drones, setting Rosneft's Ryazan refinery on fire. Russia says it struck a Nova Poshta logistics hub near Kharkiv and a cargo ship off Odesa.
2After Democrats won both chambers of Congress, Zelensky said he hopes for more US support, while the Kremlin said it hopes Trump will "continue his peacemaking efforts." US-brokered talks are set for Abu Dhabi on November 10–11.
3Brent (January 2027 contract) settled at $98.29 on November 5, rebounding from an 8%+ plunge but still below $100, as tanker fires in the Strait of Hormuz revived supply fears.

November 6, 2026 (Japan Time) Breaking News Summary
🟢 Russia and Ukraine traded overnight drone strikes on each other's energy and logistics infrastructure from the night of November 4 into November 5 (local time). Ryazan Governor Pavel Malkov said more than 200 Ukrainian drones attacked his region, and footage verified by Russian outlet Astra showed a fire at the Ryazan oil refinery. Russia's Defence Ministry claimed 496 drones were downed overnight over 16 regions and two seas, and 1,029 in total for the day.
🟡 Russia's Defence Ministry said it hit a Nova Poshta terminal in Novyi Korotych outside Kharkiv, a 330-kilovolt substation in Dnipropetrovsk region, and a dry cargo ship "carrying military equipment" 52 km southwest of Odesa. Ukraine had not confirmed the postal hub or ship strikes at the time of writing.
🟢 The death toll from Russia's November 2 guided-bomb strike on a school used as an aid distribution point in Komyshuvakha, Zaporizhzhia region, reached 40 according to Ukrainian officials; Reuters cited regional police putting it at 42, with 33 still under rubble. Ukraine's General Staff reported 167 combat engagements and 161 guided bombs on November 5 (as of 22:00 Kyiv, 05:00 JST Nov 6).
🔵 The US midterm result is now the biggest diplomatic variable. Next week's Abu Dhabi round will be the first test of how Washington behaves after the election.

Ukrainian Strikes on Russia (Drones)
🟢 Ryazan, about 200 km southeast of Moscow, was the main target. Governor Malkov said falling debris started fires at several industrial sites and damaged power lines, cutting power to parts of the city; one person was injured. He later said power was restored and the fires contained, without naming the sites. Windows were shattered at a school and classes were cancelled.
🟢 Astra-verified footage showed fire at the Rosneft-owned Ryazan refinery, one of Russia's largest. Al Jazeera's Yulia Shapovalova, reporting from Moscow, said Ukraine had stepped up refinery strikes after a brief pause in late October, noting that the Yaroslavl refinery had been hit two days earlier. She said the strikes had not stopped fuel production but caused occasional shortages as drivers rushed to fill up.
🟡 Ukrainian strikes killed three people in Russia's Belgorod region on November 4 (Al Jazeera). Meduza reported that a drone attack on occupied Donetsk on the night of November 2–3 hit a building of mobile operator Feniks, disrupting mobile service.
🔵 Reuters cited Ukrainian refinery strikes and concerns over Russian diesel exports as one factor supporting oil prices—showing how the battlefield feeds directly into global energy markets.
Russian Attacks on Ukraine and Civilian Life
🟢 According to the Kyiv Post, Russian forces dropped at least nine guided bombs on the Komyshuvakha school, then struck again at rescuers and police in a "double-tap" attack. At least four police officers and two emergency workers were among the dead. Police are collecting DNA from relatives to identify victims. Zaporizhzhia declared three days of mourning (Nov 3–5), and Latvia, holding the UN Security Council presidency, called for an emergency session.
🟡 Zelensky said: "Evil always goes further if it remains unanswered," adding that "there has been very little reaction from the world to this insane attack." No Russian explanation of the strike was found at the time of writing.
🟢 Donetsk Governor Vadym Filashkin said Russian attacks killed four civilians and injured five on November 4. Kharkiv Governor Oleh Syniehubov said more than 80 drones hit the city and 17 settlements over a day, injuring six people including a child. In Bucha district near Kyiv, drones set off large fires at a logistics centre, injuring one.
🟢 Power is the biggest daily hardship. Ukrenergo kept hourly outage schedules across the country all day on November 5, and emergency outages were applied in Sviatoshynskyi, Shevchenkivskyi and Podilskyi districts of Kyiv. Al Jazeera's Audrey McAlpine said some residents had gone days without electricity and water, and that heating will not be switched on until temperatures stay at minus 5°C for five consecutive days.
| Area | Damage (reports and officials) |
| Komyshuvakha, Zaporizhzhia | 40–42 killed, about 30–33 under rubble |
| Donetsk region | 4 killed, 5 injured (Nov 4) |
| Kharkiv region | 80+ drones, 6 injured including a child |
| Bucha district, Kyiv region | Logistics centre hit, large fires, 1 injured |
| Kyiv city | Emergency blackouts in three districts |
Zelensky and Kyiv
🟢 In an interview with Germany's ZDF, Zelensky thanked Republicans but said "the Democrats speak very clearly about supporting Ukraine," adding "there is hope that a balance of power will emerge." Strong congressional aid, he said, would be "something positive that will have an impact on Putin." On X he wrote: "The negotiations must move forward at full throttle."
🟡 Zelensky held 90 minutes of talks with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Brussels ahead of Abu Dhabi (The Hill). In Madrid on November 5, he met Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and King Felipe VI, told the Ibero-American Summit that every power plant in Ukraine had been damaged, and asked for transformers, cables and generators from Latin American countries and Spain.
🔵 His hopes for Congress reflect frustration with the administration: last month Trump waived sanctions on Russia that Congress had approved, and agreed to import Russian diesel. Democratic aides say Ukraine aid will be a priority from January, but foreign policy remains in the President's hands.
Putin, Moscow and Russia
🟡 Speaking in Moscow on National Unity Day (Nov 4), Putin said "the powerful, unconquerable spirit of unity among the peoples of Russia is passed down from generation to generation." Reports reviewed did not show any direct reference to Ukraine.
🟢 Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the midterms "an internal US matter" and said Russia hopes Trump "will continue his peacemaking efforts." The Foreign Ministry said Moscow's policy does not depend on "shifts in the political climate in other countries." Peskov also said a Putin–Erdogan call could be arranged at short notice (Reuters).
NATO and Russian Pressure Beyond Ukraine
🟢 Europe remains on alert over a suspected Russian "shadow war": airspace violations over Poland, Lithuania and Estonia, drone incidents over Poland, Finland and the Baltics, and a failed plot to blow up cargo planes at Leipzig/Halle Airport in August, later attributed to Russia by the European Commission (Al Jazeera).
🟡 Polish authorities arrested four people accused of spying for Russian intelligence (Reuters). EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas urged the new Congress to keep backing Ukraine; German Chancellor Friedrich Merz doubted Trump would change course; UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Putin will not be invited to the 2027 G20 summit in Britain.
Diplomacy: US Mediation and Trump's Social Media
🟢 Witkoff said the Abu Dhabi talks will cover "post-war security arrangements, de-escalation, humanitarian efforts, and next steps toward peace," preceded by meetings in Brussels with France, Germany, the UK, the EU and NATO.
🟡 No new Truth Social post by President Trump on Ukraine or Russia could be confirmed at the time of writing. Ukrainska Pravda reported on Nov 4 that Trump said both sides were "ready" for a deal. On Iran, Trump said Vance's view that the war cost the midterms was "largely true," but that he would strike again because "you can't let Iran have a nuclear" weapon. Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei wrote that "the process of the US's collapse has accelerated."
🔵 Analysts expect little: former US ambassador William Taylor said the breakthrough "would be for Putin to say yes" to a ceasefire, while Heather Conley expects at most prisoner swaps and another meeting (RFE/RL).
Oil Prices and the Economy
🟢 On November 5, Brent (January 2027, front month) settled up $3.67 (3.88%) at $98.29, and WTI (December 2026) rose $2.40 (2.72%) to $90.52, after both fell more than 8% the previous day to their lowest since August 31 (Reuters). Brent remains below $100.
🟡 Intraday quotes varied: Oilprice.com showed Brent at $95.39 and WTI at $88.21; Trading Economics showed Brent near $96.70. A reliable real-time price for the second-month Brent contract (February 2027) could not be confirmed; on November 2 it traded about $3 below January. The January contract expires around November 30.
