Last updated: November 5, 2026, 07:09 JST / This article is built around Al Jazeera and cross-checked against CNN, FOX, BBC, AFP and Reuters reporting, together with official statements from Ukrainian, Russian, US and Iranian authorities. Japanese domestic media were excluded from our sources.
| Key takeaways (3 points) | |
| 1 | Russian strikes are hitting civilians and the power grid. On Nov 2, Russia dropped bombs, including a three-ton FAB-3000, on an aid distribution point in Komyshuvakha, Zaporizhzhia region. The death toll is 37 according to regional authorities and 40 according to President Zelensky. Overnight into Nov 4, Russia launched 310 drones, causing blackouts in Zhytomyr and Kovel. |
| 2 | Diplomacy is moving on several tracks. The US, European partners, NATO and Ukraine met in Brussels on Nov 4–5. US-mediated US–Russia–Ukraine talks are set for Abu Dhabi on Nov 10–11. First Lady Melania Trump is due to host Russian and Ukrainian human rights officials at the White House. |
| 3 | Oil plunged and Brent fell below $100. After Democrats won both chambers of Congress in the US midterms, markets bet that the Iran war will end soon. Brent (January 2027) fell about 9–10% to $93–95, and WTI (December 2026) fell to around $88. |

November 5, 2026 (JST) Breaking Summary
🟢 On Monday, Nov 2, Russia struck a former school used as a humanitarian aid point in Komyshuvakha, Zaporizhzhia region. Ivan Fedorov, head of Ukraine's restoration agency, said nine bombs were dropped, including FAB-3000 three-ton glide bombs. On Nov 4, the regional military administration put the death toll at 37, a figure Reuters also reported. National Police said that by the third day of the search, 12 bodies had been identified and 59 people were still missing.
🟡 On Nov 4, Zelensky said the death toll had risen to 40 and that more than 30 people could still be under the rubble (Ukrinform). Russia said it had struck Ukrainian units in Zaporizhzhia region, killing up to 25 servicemen (Reuters). This claim has not been independently linked to the aid-point strike.
🟢 Overnight into Nov 4, Russia launched 310 strike drones, beginning at 18:00 Kyiv time on Nov 3 (01:00 JST, Nov 4). Ukraine's Air Force said 272 were shot down or neutralized. Zhytomyr lost power, and most of Kovel was left without electricity (Kyiv Post, Ukrinform).
🟢 On the diplomatic front, US, European, NATO and Ukrainian teams met in Brussels on Nov 4. US envoy Steve Witkoff said trilateral US–Russia–Ukraine talks will resume in Abu Dhabi on Nov 10–11 (Axios, Al Jazeera). Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it would be "impossible" for Europeans to join the trilateral talks.
🔵 Attacks on civilians and the power grid are getting heavier, even as the negotiating framework firms up. The US midterm result is a new variable: it may add pressure on Washington to wind down the Iran war and to change how it handles aid to Ukraine. The new Congress, however, is not seated until Jan 3, 2027.

Ukraine's strikes on Russia (drones, etc.)
🟢 On Nov 3, Ukrainian drones hit the Yaroslavl refinery, about 770 km from the front line. Governor Mikhail Yevrayev called it a "large-scale" drone attack. He said there was a fire, two workers were injured, and about 124 drones were involved (Reuters, Newsweek, Kyiv Independent).
🟡 Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said "a total of 493 UAVs flew toward the Moscow agglomeration" between 20:30 on Nov 2 and 07:30 on Nov 3 (Moscow time). He said most were destroyed at distant approaches and "as many as 187 drones were neutralized as they approached Moscow" (TASS). No damage was reported.
🟢 Early on Nov 4, a drone hit an Ozon logistics center in Adygeysk, in Russia's Adygea Republic. Ozon said all staff were evacuated and no one was hurt, and it suspended intake from sellers. Open-source analysts at Astra reported that part of the roof of the roughly 10,000 square-meter warehouse had collapsed (Kyiv Independent, Ukrinform).
🟡 Russia's Defense Ministry said it downed 46 Ukrainian drones over 13 regions between 08:00 and 20:00 Moscow time on Nov 4 (Izvestia). Ukraine's Defense Ministry said it hit at least 30 strategic targets inside Russia in October, including seven defense plants and three military airfields. Kyiv also says it destroyed two Pantsir air-defense systems in Crimea.
🔵 The IEA counts at least 28 Russian refineries hit since 2022. The campaign caused fuel shortages in Russia this summer and is clearly meant to strengthen Kyiv's hand before negotiations.
Russia's attacks on Ukraine and civilian life
🟢 Zelensky called the Nov 3 strike a "complex, massive attack" involving 289 drones, 17 ballistic missiles and 59 cruise missiles. It hit power plants and substations across 9–10 regions (Reuters/Al Jazeera). The energy company DTEK said three of its thermal power plants stopped generating, and more than 180,000 people in Zhytomyr region lost power.
🟢 In Kharkiv, a strike on a city hospital injured 73 people. Zelensky wrote on X that "the Russians directly struck a city clinical hospital." Mayor Ihor Terekhov said more than 1,000 windows were shattered.
🟡 Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said three drones were sent toward a substation critical to the Khmelnytskyi nuclear plant. He called it "a serious step of escalation." Nuclear plants supply about half of Ukraine's electricity and have reduced their output. Kyiv also says it has obtained a Russian winter plan listing 60 critical sites as targets for up to 1,000 missiles, drones and bombs (Euromaidan Press).
🟢 Kyiv's heating season began on Nov 2. On Nov 4, falling drone debris started fires in the Sviatoshynskyi and Holosiivskyi districts. Zelensky ordered the government to present measures to restore electricity, heating and water by the end of the day. The cabinet also expanded its private air-defense pilot program, including lowering the minimum age for participants from 21 to 18.
Damage summary (Nov 2–4)
| Date / Area | Damage | Source |
| Nov 2, Komyshuvakha | Nine bombs including a FAB-3000; 37 (regional authorities) to 40 (president) dead, 59 missing, 5 injured | Regional administration, Reuters, Euromaidan Press |
| Nov 3, Kharkiv | Hospital hit; 73 injured, more than 1,000 windows shattered | Reuters/Al Jazeera |
| Nov 3, Zhytomyr region | More than 180,000 people without power | Governor, Al Jazeera |
| Nov 3–4, Dnipropetrovsk region | 2 dead in Dnipro and 38 injured across the region; 2 more injured in a strike on a business on Nov 4 | Governor Hanzha, Interfax-Ukraine |
| Nov 3–4, Vilniansk | 2 dead, 1 injured; fire in an apartment block | Regional authorities |
| Nov 3–4, Donetsk region | 1 dead each in Kramatorsk and Yasnohirka; 3 injured in Sloviansk | Governor Filashkin |
| Nov 4, Zhytomyr / Kovel | Power facilities hit; most of Kovel without electricity | Kyiv Post |
| Nov 4, Odesa region | Energy facility, shopping center and homes hit; fire at the shopping center | State Emergency Service, Kyiv Post |
🔵 Casualty figures differ by source and are still changing. The table shows the latest figure from each report. Danielle Bell, head of the UN human rights monitoring mission, said the "timing and location" of the aid distribution had been widely publicized and that the attack likely violated international law.
President Zelensky and Kyiv
🟢 Speaking alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin on Nov 3, Zelensky said: "Tomorrow, our teams will also be in Brussels... America, Europe, NATO and Ukraine will discuss recovery packages and security guarantees." He said the trilateral talks "will pave the way for a trilateral format at the leaders' level." He added, "Europe is part of the process. This is essential," and "Peace must be worthy, and then peace can become lasting" (Ukrinform).
🟢 Zelensky and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius discussed speeding up deliveries of PAC-2 Patriot missiles, citing a "chronic shortage of interceptors." On Nov 4, Zelensky awarded Melania Trump the Order of Princess Olga, 1st class, for her role in the Oleshky ceasefire (Reuters). He also said Russia was trying to kill people rather than build on that truce.
🟡 Ukraine's anti-corruption bureau NABU and prosecutors at SAPO unveiled "Operation Carthage." They allege that serving senior officials of the SBU security service, the National Police and the Prosecutor General's Office took bribes to protect fraudulent call centers. SBU chief Oleksandr Poklad dismissed two employees who are under investigation.
🔵 Anti-corruption enforcement during the war is a precondition for EU accession and continued Western support. Kyiv needs to show both diplomatic progress and cleaner governance at the same time.
President Putin, Moscow and inside Russia
🟢 On National Unity Day, Nov 4, Putin addressed the "Peoples of Russia" week (Vedomosti, Rossiyskaya Gazeta, RIA Novosti). He recalled the 1612 militia of Minin and Pozharsky, saying they "accomplished the feat of saving the Fatherland and drove the invaders out of the Kremlin." He said the "cohesion of all its peoples has always played, and still plays, a key role," and urged people to "be vigilant and stop any attempts to undermine public stability." Representatives of more than 100 peoples received state awards for their part in the "special military operation." In the reporting we could confirm, the speech made no direct reference to the US or the peace talks.
🟡 Peskov called European participation in the trilateral talks "impossible" and said there are "no similar initiatives" to the Oleshky truce. Russia's delegation is expected to be led by Vladimir Medinsky. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) says Medinsky stalled the February 2026 Geneva talks and reads his role as a sign that Moscow prefers a protracted war.
🟢 The war's costs are reaching ordinary Russians. Il Foglio reported that the Kremlin paid refiners 305.5 billion rubles in "damper" subsidies in September alone to keep fuel prices down. The forecast for the 2026 budget deficit has doubled to 3.2% of GDP, and VAT is rising from 20% to 22%. Traders say crude loadings at Novorossiysk are delayed by almost three weeks, and the Ozon strike has disrupted e-commerce deliveries.
🔵 High oil prices during the Iran war gave Moscow temporary relief, but refinery strikes, a strong ruble and military spending have eroded it. A sharp fall in oil prices adds new pressure on Russia's budget.
NATO and Russian pressure beyond Ukraine
🟢 Polish PM Donald Tusk said "troubling movement had been spotted along the Polish-Russian border" with Kaliningrad just after midnight. He said Poland "swiftly mobilized the necessary forces and assets to the area" and warned that "this tension and escalation from Russia may continue for some time" (The Moscow Times, ABC, NYT).
🟢 Since Nov 2, Polish police have reinforced the Podlasie and Warmia-Masuria provinces, including with counter-terrorism units. Police chief Marek Boroń said the information also came from "external security services" (Notes from Poland). Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Poland of aggression.
🟡 Germany detained a fourth suspect over a Starlink-related fire that Poland blames on Moscow. Latvia, which chairs the UN Security Council this month, called for an emergency meeting on the Komyshuvakha strike. Reuters reported that the Pentagon has urged several NATO allies to tone down their public rhetoric about Russia.
🟢 Attacks on merchant ships in the Black Sea are continuing. Canada will bar Russian and Belarusian players from the World Junior Hockey Championship. The Visegrad Four are meeting in Trenčín, Slovakia, on Nov 4–5 to discuss Ukraine, EU enlargement and energy.
🔵 Border provocations, sabotage and airspace violations are classic hybrid warfare tactics. The reported US push for restraint points to a gap between Washington's focus on negotiations and Europe's focus on the threat.
Diplomacy: US mediation and President Trump's social media posts
🟢 Witkoff said the Abu Dhabi talks will cover post-war security arrangements, de-escalation, humanitarian issues and steps toward peace. In Brussels, the European Commission hosted talks on Nov 4, with the World Bank present, on Ukraine's "Prosperity Plan" for recovery. Security-guarantee talks with the US, UK, France, Germany and NATO follow on Nov 5 (UNN).
🟡 Rustem Umerov, secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, said: "Security, recovery and development must be parts of a single plan for Ukraine after the war." We could not confirm any concrete outcome from the Nov 4 Brussels talks at the time of writing.
🟢 The Oleshky truce, which Melania Trump helped broker, ran from Oct 27 to Nov 1 and allowed about 800 people to evacuate. She is now due to host Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets and Russian commissioner Yana Lantratova at the White House (CNN, Newsweek). Lantratova has been under US sanctions since 2022 and would need a State Department waiver to enter the US.
🟡 Trump posted heavily on Truth Social as the midterm results came in. We could not confirm any new Nov 4 post about Ukraine or Russia. In interviews, he blamed the losses on "the gasoline price" and said "Iran was a piece of it" (WSJ, Reuters). Vice President JD Vance wrote on X that "any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there."
🟢 Trump told the Financial Times that the US has no immediate plans to strike Iran, adding, "we seem to be getting everything we want." Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said those expecting a shift in US hostility are "gravely mistaken," while Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said "Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message" (Reuters, BBC). Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei warned Washington against further military action.
🟡 Iran's Revolutionary Guards said four tankers were destroyed by mines south of the Strait of Hormuz and two more ships were seized; this has not been independently confirmed. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill ordered state ports to refuse tankers carrying Russian fuel imported under a Trump-brokered diesel deal (Kyiv Independent).
🔵 A Democratic Congress could scrutinize Ukraine aid and any easing of Russia sanctions from January. The current Congress has passed no major US military aid package for Ukraine (Al Jazeera). The Abu Dhabi talks will be an early test of Washington's leverage after the election.
Oil prices and the economic impact
🟢 Nov 4 brought the sharpest oil sell-off since April. The December 2026 Brent contract expired on Oct 30, so January 2027 Brent is now the front month. It fell from $103.60 to $94.83 (-8.47%) at 01:58 JST on Nov 5 (The National) and to $94.66 (-8.6%) at 03:06 JST (OilPrice.com). FinanceFeeds reported a settlement of $93.52 (-$10.08, -9.73%). Brent is below $100 for the first time since early October.
🟡 We could not find a reliable live price for the second-month contract (February 2027) at the time of writing. Because the January contract does not expire until the end of November, we use it in the table below. For reference, on Oct 27 the January–February spread was about $4 (Investing.com). For WTI we use the front-month December 2026 contract, which expires in mid-to-late November.

| Previous close (Nov 3) | Brent $103.60 | — | Global Oil Shock |
🟢 Three factors drove the drop. First, Democrats won Congress, raising pressure to end the Iran war. Second, Trump signaled he is in no rush to strike Iran again. Third, a senior Iranian official said Hormuz could reopen within two days if oil sanctions are lifted and frozen assets are released (FinanceFeeds, XTB). JPMorgan estimates the oil market was in surplus by about 1.4 million barrels per day in October.
🟡 Accounts of Hormuz traffic conflict. XTB says flows are near pre-war levels, while Global Oil Shock reported about 490 ships waiting outside the strait on Nov 3. US diesel prices topped $6.50 a gallon, and the Energy Department will loan 300,000 barrels from the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve.
🔵 Lower oil prices squeeze Russia's export revenue at the same time as refinery strikes and a widening deficit. Prices are moving fast, so please re-check the latest quotes at the time of publication.
Other topics
🟢 Front line: Ukraine's General Staff reported 201 clashes on Nov 3 and 208 over the following day, with the heaviest fighting on the Kostiantynivka axis. ISW assessed that neither side advanced on Nov 3. The General Staff says Russia used 3,910 kamikaze drones and 160 guided bombs that day; these figures have not been independently verified.
🟢 Oleshky: About 2,000 of the town's roughly 24,000 pre-war residents are believed to remain. Evacuees traveled through Crimea, Anapa and Belarus before re-entering Ukraine from the north. The BBC reported that some residents have been cooking garden weeds to survive.
🟡 US Congress: Ukrainian-born Rep. Victoria Spartz, who had called on Ukraine to cede territory and on Zelensky to resign, lost her seat to a Democrat (Kyiv Independent).
Wrap-up: three things to watch
| Three things to watch | |
| 1 | The Komyshuvakha toll and the international response. Many people are still missing, and attention is on whether the UN Security Council meeting Latvia requested goes ahead. |
| 2 | The Abu Dhabi talks (Nov 10–11) and the White House meeting of human rights officials. Watch the stance of Medinsky's delegation and whether talks proceed without Europe at the table. |
| 3 | Whether oil keeps falling. US–Iran talks, the Strait of Hormuz and the new Congress will shape both Russia's budget and the outlook for support to Ukraine. |
